The Papagayo Area

The Papagayo Golf & Country Club is located in Guanacaste, the northwestern province of Costa Rica, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west.  The Papagayo area is considered the country’s main tourist attraction being  home to some of the most luxurious hotels and providing spacious rooms overlooking beautiful beaches for tourists especially from North America.

The golf course is not far from Sardinal de Carrillo, the main town before reaching the Papagayo area, and is considered a typical idyllic sleepy Costa Rican village with a large central square and an old church.  Here, you can find pharmacies, markets, sodas (which are considered mini stores),  and cafes. Driving ten minutes further towards the coast, Playas del Coco is right on the beach with a more vibrant scene where you can find live music, hotels, pharmacies, medical facilities and shopping of all kinds.

Getting to Papagayo Golf & Country Club is a pleasant twenty minute drive from the  provincial capital city Liberia Airport through the countryside on a paved highway and smaller roads.  This location is a main hub for scheduled flights from airlines such as United, Delta, Southwest, American and Air Canada that operate to and from places like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami and New York.

The Environment

As the world leader in Ecotourism, Costa Rica offers innumerable ways to enjoy the region around the Papagayo Golf & Country Club. For example, guests can hike through the mountains of Rincon National Park and marvel at the rising sulfur vapors of the two inactive volcanoes. Guests might also treat themselves to a soothing mud bath at the hot springs, a relaxing swim in volcano-warm water or a therapeutic massage.

The beaches in the Papagayo area are some of the most pristine beaches earning a Blue Flag recognizing the community’s active engagement in keeping the area clean and free from contamination.  Plenty of palm trees and iguanas are visible and many of the beaches are great for snorkeling, swimming, fishing and scuba diving. Playa Hermosa, Playa Blanca, Playa Ocotal and Playa Panama are all very close in distance.

For more active visitors, jet ski, catamaran, boat and sailing tours as well as quad, horseback riding and rafting excursions are also a way to have fun and enjoy freedom. The more adventurous can try ziplining, a rope slide between two mountain points of different heights.

The local tourist organizations will gladly organize excursions to the numerous waterfalls or other national parks in the area.
